Know thyself
The most important first step in college or career planning is some honest self-reflection. Think about your learning style, your skills, your interests and what priorities you have for a college. There are many factors that shape decisions (family, friends, media, society) and the toughest first step in this process may be to quiet the things around you and think about how and where you will be most successful. College Priorities
Once you have reflected on yourself, think about what priorities you have for college. All college are not created equal. For example did you know that there is a very selective college of 28 students out West (Deep Springs College) where students live, learn and work on a ranch? Or that there is a small, but highly ranked Engineering School in Massachusetts (Olin College of Engineering) where less than 1,000 students applied in 2015 and 100% of all financial need is met? Colleges come in all shapes and sizes and determining what is important to you can help direct you to the place you will be most successful. Once again, where YOU will be most successful...not your best friend or the football team.
