- Use your planner to write down homework assignments and upcoming test dates.
- Be prepared to learn! Bring your materials to class and completed homework to class.
- Stay organized. Have all of your materials in front of you including notes, old tests and study guides.
- Plan ahead! Study a little each night instead of cramming the night before.
- Designate a place to study with good lighting and little distractions.
- Create a to-do list. Start out by studying the most important or difficult information first.
- Space out your studying, don't procrastinate! You will learn more by studying a little every day instead of waiting to cram at the last minute. By studying everyday, the material will be in your long-term memory.
- Take a study break.
- Take good notes and review the important ideas and concepts.
- Make sure you understand the material well, don't just read through the material and try to memorize everything.
- Create note-cards.
- Test yourself or have someone test you on the material to find out what your weak and strong areas are. You can use the review questions at the end of each chapter, old tests, or other study guides.
- Get help if you do not understand something. Meet with a teacher or get peer tutoring during your study center.
Reduce test anxiety
- Remember that exams measure what you can demonstrate about your learning thus far in a course, not your worth as a person.
- Anxiety arises from the fear of poor performance. Know your “stuff” when you go into the exam.
- Break study periods into smaller time units and insert breaks between sessions. This allows you to focus on a reasonable amount of material and have some sense of progress.
- Do not “cram” for an exam! If you have only a short time to study, focus on areas that need work rather than on those that you already know.
- Eliminate negative self-statements such as, “I’m going to fail this exam.” Replace this statement with, “I am studying hard and will do the best I can.”
- Look at the whole exam and do first the questions you are able to answer with ease.
- Try to maintain a regular place for studying that is free from distractions.
- During the exam focus on answering the question and not the end result.
- If your notes are in poor shape, you might borrow a friend’s notes to fill in gapes.
- Take a deep breath. It is just a test and if you study, do your homework and try you will pass the class.
